The Chronicles of Riddick franchise was best remembered for making a star out of Vin Diesel, but the full cast of the series was a star-studded lineup. Starting in the year 2000 with the sci-fi/horror film Pitch Black, the Riddick franchise hit the ground running and established itself as a unique cinematic experience that blended action elements with its science fiction and fantasy. Every movie in the series featured a diverse cast of established stars and up-and-comers, and many of the series' leading performers went on to become superstars in their own right.
While some Chronicles of Riddick movies were better than others, the series performed well at the box office and justified a number of sequels that further explored the universe of the first film. Diesel's anti-hero character Richard Riddick was the main focus of the series, and he appeared across the entire franchise with the rest of the cast rotating from film to film, with a few notable exceptions. Remarkably, what started as a cult-classic science fiction film in Pitch Black, blossomed into a bona fide pop culture juggernaut through comic books, video games, and other Riddick media.
Vin Diesel (Richard B. Riddick)
First introduced in Pitch Black as a shady criminal, Diesel's Richard Riddick quickly blossomed into the focus of the series. Riddick's full powers and abilities would be further fleshed out across the series, and Diesel was on hand to lend his trademarked action machismo to the role. Just a year after Pitch Black's release, Diesel would hit again with 2001's The Fast and the Furious, and he would remain a part of the street-racing franchise well into the 2020s. The Riddick films helped to make Diesel a full-fledged movie star, and he's been one of the most famous faces of action cinema since the beginning of the new millennium.
Radha Mitchell (Carolyn Fry)
Appearing only in Pitch Black, Radha Mitchell played the conflicted docking pilot Carolyn Fry who was motivated by her deep sense of regret for nearly sacrificing her passengers to save her own life. Pitch Black came early in Mitchell's career, and she had only made a handful of on-screen appearances beforehand. She would land major roles throughout the 2000s in films like 2002's Phone Booth and 2006's Silent Hill, but she would mostly stick to genre pictures as the '00s became the '10s. She appeared in 2016's London Has Fallen, and in 2022 she had a major role in the Australian film Blueback.
Cole Hauser (William J. Johns)
Cole Hauser gave a stunning performance in Pitch Black as William J. Johns, a greedy bounty hunter who infiltrated the group while posing as a law enforcement officer. Hauser had already appeared in a few hits by the year 2000, and he had previously been seen in 1993's Dazed and Confused and Good Will Hunting from 1997. The actor would continue to appear in action films throughout the 2000s including blockbusters like 2003's 2 Fast 2 Furious, and he only made sporadic TV appearances during that era. However, in 2018 Hauser landed a lead role in the immensely popular TV series Yellowstone.
Keith David (Abu "Imam" al-Walid)
Instantly recognizable for his deep voice, Keith David played Abu al-Walid, a passenger aboard the ship who was traveling to New Mecca. Keith David was one of the veterans of the cast of Pitch Black, and he would reprise his role in The Chronicles of Riddick in 2004. David was a staple of the 1980s and starred in films that ranged from horror like 1982's The Thing to action like Road House from 1989, and he continued his successful career as a character actor into the 2000s. David also became a celebrated voice actor in the meantime, and was seen in a small role in 2022's Nope.
Judi Dench (Aereon)
Judi Dench instantly elevated the standing of 2004's The Chronicles of Riddick with her appearances as the captive elemental Aereon who was forced by Lord Marshal to be his advisor. Already in her fifth decade of on-screen work by the year 2004, Dench had given superb performances in films like 1985's A Room With A View, but had also made a name for herself in genre movies with outings like the James Bond film Goldeneye in 1995. She would continue to reprise her Bond role well into the 2010s, and she racked up further accolades in films like 2021's critical hit Belfast.
Thandiwe Newton (Dame Vaako)
Thandiwe Newton's best movies showed that she could play any part she was cast in, and her Chronicles of Riddick role saw her as the scheming Dame Vaako who worked behind the scenes to have her husband replace the Lord Marshal. Newton had turned heads with her earlier work in films like 1994's Interview with the Vampire, and she would follow up her Riddick performance with a turn in the controversial Oscar winner Crash in 2004. She found great success on the big screen throughout the 2000s and 2010s but landed a career-defining role in the HBO series Westworld in 2016.
Karl Urban (Commander Vaako)
Played by Karl Urban, Commander Vaako was one of Lord Marshal's most loyal soldiers who was sent to track down and kill Richard Riddick. Urban was already an action star thanks to his role in The Lord of the Rings, and 2004 was a banner year when he not only starred in The Chronicles of Riddick but The Bourne Supremacy as well. Urban would return for a small cameo in 2013's Riddick, and he had already attached himself to the 2009 Star Trek franchise and its sequels. The actor appeared in the 2017 film Thor: Ragnarok, and found success on TV in the superhero series The Boys in 2019.
Alexa Davalos (Jack/Kyra)
Though Alexa Davalos did not play the part of Jack in Pitch Black, she did appear in Chronicles of Riddick as the older version of the character who was on the hunt for Riddick. The Chronicles of Riddick was her first major film role but Davalos had previously appeared as a recurring character on the series Angel between 2002 and 2003. Davalos starred in a handful of films after 2004, including the 2007 horror film The Mist, but she found main roles on TV series like The Man in the High Castle in 2015. In 2021, Davalos landed a main role on the series FBI: Most Wanted.
Colm Feore (Lord Marshal)
The leader of the Necromonger religion in The Chronicles of Riddick, the Lord Marshal hoped to destroy Richard Riddick because a prophecy foretold he would die at the hands of a Furyan. The villain was brought to life brilliantly by Colm Feore, and the established actor is most recognizable from his roles in films like 1997's Face/Off. Feore continued to appear in a variety of hit films throughout the '00s including 2008's The Changeling, and he even had lengthy stints on TV series like 24 and The Borgias. In 2019, Feore appeared as part of the main cast of the TV series The Umbrella Academy.
Katee Sackhoff (Dahl)
Appearing in 2013's Riddick as Dahl, Katee Sackhoff breathed life into the distrustful Lieutenant of "Boss" Johns who often put her abilities as a sniper to good use. Sackhoff had been working in TV and movies since the 1990s, but her role in Battlestar Galactica was what made her a household name with science fiction fans. She followed up her success in Riddick with a lead role in the TV series Longmire from 2012 to 2017, and she often lent her voice to various animated projects including 2021's Batman: The Long Halloween.
Jordi Mollà (Santana)
Played by Jordi Mollà, Santana was a bounty hunter who arrived to eliminate Richard Riddick and was disturbed to find competition moving in on his big score. Mollà had already had a long and storied career in his native Spain by the time he arrived in the cast of Riddick, but he had also appeared in notable American films like Bad Boys II in 2003. Mollà landed a major role in 2015's In the Heart of the Sea but found more success on the small screen in shows like Queen of the South and Jack Ryan in 2019.
Dave Bautista (Diaz)
Ex-wrestler turned actor Dave Bautista appeared in Riddick as the reserved but dangerous soldier, Diaz, and was perfectly cast as the imposing goon. Every Dave Bautista movie showed off his impressive size, and Riddick was one of his first big character roles where he was given more to work with. Bautista became a household name thanks to his turn in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, and he continued to land a bevy of action-oriented roles all throughout the 2010s. Movies like 2023's Knock at the Cabin allowed Bautista to demonstrate his range, and he showed he could do more than just action.
Matt Nable ("Boss" Johns)
In Riddick, Matt Nable played mercenary "Boss" Johns who hunted down Richard Riddick in order to find out what happened to his son William during the events of Pitch Black. Nable's career before Riddick was mostly composed of smaller roles in indie films, and The Chronicles of Riddick franchise allowed him to branch out into projects like 2016's Hacksaw Ridge. Nable appeared in a recurring role as part of DC Comic's TV universe, and he had lengthy stints on shows like Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow.
